my thoughts on the first gen: team rocket slays, brock's cringe moments, and ash's pokédex addiction
3 min read
just finished watching the first gen of the anime, and honestly, i'm shocked at how much i liked it. thought it'd be boring since a lot of episodes don't really connect, but even the "filler" ones are pretty solid. love how i can just throw on a few eps, let my brain go on autopilot, and still enjoy it without stressing over every tiny detail. the characters are super likeable, and the first 151 pokémon? all bangers. don't love every single one, but you can't deny they're iconic.
ash might not be the smartest or hardest-working main character ever, but i still like him a lot. he's just really sweet and cares so much about pokémon. in brazil, we have this influencer/celeb named luisa mell, who got famous for rescuing stray and abused dogs. i call ash 'luisa mell' 'cause he basically does the same thing with pokémon lmao. ash pissed me off so many times with his dumb choices or missing easy catches, and i don't agree with half of his decisions, but i wouldn't change a thing about his personality. he's literally just a kid with a big dream, and i'm rooting for him.
i get it, it's for the audience, but it's hilarious (and lowkey annoying) how he wants to be the best trainer yet still pulls out the pokédex every time he sees a new pokémon.
my boyfriend was hyped to see my reaction to charizard making ash lose the pokémon league, but honestly? i didn't really care lol. i always knew he wasn't gonna win, so it wasn't a shock, but idk... losing like that felt kinda weak. would've made more sense if he lost because he didn't train enough.
team rocket is easily one of the best anime trios ever. their friendship is so wholesome, and i love how they act like they don't care about each other but will literally do anything to help and support one another. james is such a good dude despite… y'know... the whole crime thing. yeah, them showing up every episode trying (and failing) to steal pikachu gets kinda repetitive, but the episodes that actually focus on them? so good and sometimes even emotional. love them sm ♡
y'all have no idea how much i appreciate meowth. he's got the second most screen time after pikachu, but somehow not everybody likes him?? yeah, he can be annoying sometimes, but his whole backstory about learning to talk and walk like a human is actually so (╥_╥) or that episode where he's treated like a god on some island, but he misses his friends so much that he just leaves?? even tho he could've had a whole new life?? or that time he fell in love with a girl just because she took care of him when he was sick. i can't. i just can't aaaAAaAAAaaaAAAA
misty is such a rollercoaster for me. sometimes i love her, sometimes she pisses me off. i hate how she treats psyduck. i know she never wanted him in the first place, but it sucks how he adores her and she literally doesn't care. she only appreciates him when he does something useful for her. which makes me wonder: does she even like pokémon, or does she just like that they listen to her? or that they're strong? or cute? idk. her feelings about her pokémon are just kinda confusing to me. but overall, i like her. she's such a diva sometimes, but then there are moments where i straight-up can't stand her.
brock is cool, but the way half his personality is just him thirsting over girls gets annoying real fast. didn't miss him at all when he left, tbh (tracey is way better).
not gonna get into my favorite first gen pokémon here 'cause y'all can check my pokémon shrine page for that, along with my favorite episodes.
