forgive me for being cringe, but i really believe i have a special connection with music. not in a singer-songwriter way, not in a "i make and live off music" way, but in a listener way, where every little detail hits just right and i'm like "yep, that's exactly it".
i grew up listening to music because of my dad. every weekend, he'd blast "sertanejo" on the house radio and we'd watch tv on mute so we wouldn't have to turn the music off. he still has his vinyl collection from back when that was a thing, and i have my cd collection that i've never actually played because i feel bad for them lol.
as a kid, i'd close my bedroom door, put a cd in the radio, lie down on the floor with pillows and blankets, and just listen with my eyes closed. no phone, just me and the music. sometimes, i'd get obsessed with a song and put it on repeat every single day (and make my family suffer through it too) (still do this, btw). i had one of those tiny mp3 players and would stay up till 4 am doing literally nothing but listening to music. sometimes, i'd even fall asleep with my headphones on, music still playing.
you know what's the coolest part? i learned english through music! more specifically, with selena gomez. i used to play her songs and sing along while reading the lyrics, repeating every word exactly how i heard it, like a karaoke. that helped me a lot with vocabulary, listening and pronunciation, even though i love my brazilian accent. i still do this, not to learn english anymore, but just to pretend i'm at a karaoke, which is pretty fun.
music just hits different for me. my mood fully depends on having a soundtrack throughout the day, and it's not even about drowning out bad thoughts like some people say, it's just because i genuinely love listening to music. when i say music is my therapy, i mean it. i don't even need to be listening to music to be hearing music. my brain is on an endless loop, replaying random snippets all day and i'll be like "this song is stuck in my head" at least five times before i finally give in and play it. ppl who know me say i look kinda sad when i'm not listening to music.
when i love a song, i listen to it to the point where i learn the singer's breathing patterns. i pick up on the tiniest details in the instrumental, the ones you gotta focus hard to even notice. also, i'm obsessed with songs that have panning (when the sound moves from one ear to the other in headphones) and with songs that match the production to the lyrics, like when a line mentions coughing and then there's an actual cough sound right after.
i don't think a song needs some deep ass meaning to be good, but i do appreciate well-written lyrics. when a song's lyrics really hit me, the feeling is just different. obviously, i love watching those genius videos where artists break down their lyrics.
i don't stick to just one genre, but i'm fully immersed in pop culture (basically grew up in it). my diva is ariana grande and i'm with her till the end! but if i had to pick my overall favorite singers, it's billie eilish and kim taeyeon. i could never pick just one favorite song or album, so i made this page to share my ever-growing list of favorites. but don't think that just because i love music means i love every song out there lol. i actually hate a lot of songs, but i'd rather spend my time talking about the ones i love!
scroll down for my playlist with my fave songs. pick one and you'll see stuff like the album, release date, and more. you can listen to a 30-sec preview by clicking play (careful with the volume tho). make sure javascript is on or things might not work right. i'm always adding new songs, so check back every now and then!
